Cold Steel era put a massive shitpost target on this series and /fg/ manages to be one of the worst generals on /vg/ which leaks out onto /v/ as well. You'll still find a lot of fans though when a game actually releases.

game quality in this series fluctuates heavily, and the setting changes a lot every arc so people who liked what the first arc offered don't necessarily like the rest of the arcs

And yes the Sky 1st demo is amazing. The perfect remake, it updates the gameplay to match the modern titles while still keeping most of the legacy and tradition, even the town layout is 1:1 which is impressive given that the original uses 2.5D perspective tricks to make a lot of the map work.

I think Sky FC, Cold Steel 1 and Daybreak all work as new jumping on points.
The only one that doesn't is Zero because

The problem with this sort of attitude is that you forget that Japanese is a much politer language in general which just doesn't have much in the way of formal expressions of obscenity or swearing in the first place. A direct translation which reads as fairly mild to an English audience is actually considered to be furiously insulting in Japanese. Johnathan Clements, who has a literal doctorate in anime (no, seriously, look him up), pointed this out in the commentaries for a lot of old-school Manga Entertainment OVAs from back in the Nineties - we mock them nowadays for all the excessive swearing, but even if the Japanese person is literally saying "you're such a silly-billy you country bumpkin" it's intended to come across to the domestic audience as "you're a fucking retard you cocksucking redneck" and Manga was matching the style if not the tone. It's the same here - Estelle might sound, to an English ear, as being restrained, but in Japanese she's really pushing the envelope, and the translation has just replicated that tone that modern English culture needs to be more direct to express.

In fact I started playing Sky because of how much its style reminded me of the Lunar and Grandia games, especially with the emotive portraits during the dialogue.

Both the Lunar and Grandia series still end up being better than Trails when it comes to NPC dialogue too, yeah Trails can boast ever changing NPC dialogue, but Lunar and Grandia have that PLUS your party actually talking back and conversing which Trails very rarely does. Trails also lacks some sort of system for your party members to actually interact such as Grandia’s dinners or Tales skits.

Because outside of the Sky trilogy and maybe Zero/Azure, the games are awful.
They have charm, there's no denying that, but the stories are the most baffling mix of quality where every twist and turn is designed to let down the player in the most disappointing ways possible, not because of some subversion nonsense but because someone actually thought it was a good idea.
Despite it being a long-running series, there's zero fucking planning involved and everything is written and rewritten at the last possible moment and pushed out on ridiculous time scales. Its a train wreck that rushes another train into the pile-up just fast enough to keep people interested in the chaos.

Nightmare hasn't been hard, just tedious. Regular enemies offer no challenge unless you immediately enter turn-based combat because they're tuned as HP sponge fodder for your ultra-basic 4-hit field attack combo. The action combat camera is also total dogshit, but you can use a Souls-style lock-on, but it's really bad.

The controls are incredibly wonky. You circle to use a basic attack in turn-based mode, but you don't hit triangle twice to use a Craft, or square twice to cast an art. If you do that, you simply cancel what you're doing and leave the menu, and if you instinctively hit circle to cancel after leaving a menu, you waste your turn using a basic attack. It's an unnecessarily poorly-designed menu for the sake of being different.

This is just more Daybreak, and Daybreak is shit. It wasn't the bad writing or boring characters that drove people away from those games, as Horizon proved when they included Rean, Kevin and Rufus and it hit a 20 year low for the series in sales. It's this dumpster fire combat system that drives people away, and this game will be no different. Mark my words.

Don't let the localization distract you from the fact that you can't intercept turn bonuses anymore. You can't hijack enemy criticals with S-Breaks, and if you have a critical bonus and you choose an art, the bonus moves over to the turn where you cast. Why did they do this?

For reference, there is only ONE instance of a firm "It can't be helped" in the English releases up until now, while the Sky remake prologue alone has at least two.

Gungho is more faithful to the Japanese script than Xseed or NISA, but at the cost of the occasional ESL moment. It comes down to personal preference really.
