Every Tales game after Vesperia became low budget filler. Sidequests became DLC. Xillia was suppose to be a major hit but got a massive rush job they needed another rush job sequel to fill in the gaps. Zesteria tried to chase after the open world fad but ended up being a technical mess.
I shouldn't even have to mention Arise and the, what, 3 or 4 failed gacha attempts? I think the series is dead for real this time.

The 2D tales team got absolutely BTFO by Symphonia and never recovered. Tales of Rebirth was such irredeemable dogshit that it's a surprise Symphonia came out BEFORE Rebirth considering how everything in Rebirth feels like a de-evolution of the Tales series. The only thing the 2D team were able to muster up afterwards was a crappy remake of a different tales game.
People like to clown on Symphonia for "only getting recognition for being one of the few GameCube RPGs" but they fail to recognize that Symphonia is simply the "correct" evolutionary line of the Tales series which incidentally had high production values for the time, a miraculously competent English localization/dub (the only thing that ages the game poorly is no English dubbed skits, which was a huge oversight), and was, at the time, a fairly innovative title in terms of JRPG battle mechanics.
Symphonia would not be popular or "the best" if it wasn't a damn good game. Otherwise, what is Tales of Destiny's (PS1) excuse? It launched on the most popular platform of its generation and yet no one gave a fuck about it. Because it's not that good. Or what of Eternia? Same story. Mediocre titles that couldn't survive even on the hottest-selling platform.
Symphonia did well DESPITE being on the worst platform of its generation BECAUSE the game was high quality.

Why would characters give vital information from people from the opposing side of the war when, for the majority of the story, they are bound together as a party not because they want to but because of circumstance. The war between both nations goes on for 60% of the games runtime so please tell me why the players party, a group that doesn't really like each other till much later and is only doing what needs to be done because it would cause issues that would ripple across to both nations and make the war even worse, would divulge vital info to the enemy. When a game loses its traditional overworld map, that's usually a good indicator. So in this case, it was Graces. Even with good gameplay, it was the start of putting less and less effort in each new game.

Xilia didn't have a world map and was mostly linear hallways with no dungeon design at all. Even Graces had dungeon design.
Xillia 2, even though it's a much better game than Xillia 1, still had a mostly linear layout and was reusing a lot of the same areas from the first game.
Then came Zestiria, such a blatantly unfinished experience with cuts everywhere with a terrible battle system, a terrible story, and one of the least interesting group of party members in the series.
Which they then had to course correct with Berseria by actually trying to release a good game, which unfortunately had to be tied to Zestiria's plot by association of taking place in the same world.

Then there's Arise, which was so stripped apart of the usual Tales of traditions that it felt like it might as well not have been a Tales game. A weak story, a terrible cast, incredibly downgraded combat, and the least noticeable music in the franchise outside of the second battle theme that you can't even hear because they couldn't program an options menu that lets you adjust the voices in-battle.

You wanna know why people always talk about the earlier Tales games and suck them off? Because they were genuinely better video games.

Graces still gives me a special feeling, especially coming into it after Symphonia, Abyss, and Dawn of the New World. The new combat system was refreshing. The change in world navigation was nice too, and while the hallways are a bit dull to navigate, traveling through Abyss's world map was kind of tedious.

Xillia. Namco has this tendency to rush out games to hit arbitrary anniversary landmarks and I think Xillia was the first game in the series to be rushed out the door when it was clearly unfinished. Every "anniversary" game in the series has been a disaster in some way. Xillia, then Zestiria, and then Arise.

So I played Eternia ('Destiny II'), thought it was one of the better jrpgs on ps1. Got hyped for Symphonia on Gamecube, it was solid. Little disappointing after that but it's probably a me thing.
Vesperia I got about 40 hours in and felt like I'd had enough. It was good, only the story was too fragmented.
Started and stopped both versions of Destiny, Rebirth, Legendia.
Was gonna keep playing and beat Abyss but I lost my save file after about 20 hours.
Then on the other hand, Phantasia remake for ps1 is one of the best jrpgs I've played bar none.

What you're describing is basically what makes Tales.
They lean heavily into flashy attacks and the song and dance required to make it impactful according to old rules of Kabuki, actually.
2D they went through tons of iterations, the cut-ins were a later addition but I've never heard someone complain - getting to these moves is hard on purpose, they're supposed to be rewarding.
Vesperia did them maybe a tad too long, although I still grin like a retard when Patty slams her fuck-off huge roulette board onto the battle field or Rita goes ham effortlessly controlling the elements. And Judy's legendary bounce. 2nd tier Mystics in Vesperia actually do a nod to the cut-ins.
From there on they only ever got shorter, I remember Xillia's being short but kino and better than Graces, Berseria was alright with Magilou getting a bit shafted even in 3rd tier but at least Eleanor was goddamn kino

They're some of the best antagonists in the franchise, anon. They're memorable, have personal motivations, direct connections with the party they keep coming back to time and time again with twists and turns and hidden scenes (Legretta training Tear or Largo being Natalia's dad) and most importantly they actually continually appear throughout the entire story instead of being forgotten about for 20 hours before being confronted. You're gonna tell me Rebirth's Four Stars or Xillia's Chimeriad are better?

Some games make you pick one of two paths for a character, it basically boils down to "fun to play but hard to master" and "shit but simple", see Judith Ground vs. Air or any ToS Character T vs. S styles.
The most fun I had was playing Patty in ToV since you get a little setup you have to complete and hold more or less hitless in order to really go ham (holding on to perfect Forme) while always in the danger of self-sabotaging (this later on gets fixed with skills if you're a pussy)

Tales of, like every other rpg series, decided the main routr to go was into the action rpg direction, but the difference was that Tales of was appealing because it was still a sort of turn-based with how enemy stagger worked. I never had much contact with the Tales franchise but there's this recurring thing that I noticed which is japanese creators losing interest in this franchise.
First is Marine (yes the tuber), she said that she was BIG on Tales but doesn't really follow it these days. Then there was a fantasy japanese Light Novel I was reading, in the afterword the writer mentions the stuff he likes, and he also goes on a tangent of being a big fan of Tales in the past but not really playing it nowadays.

Played through Symphonia last year with my gf because it’s her favorite game and found myself enjoying it a lot so I’ve been trekking through Vesperia lately (Estelle is best girl and has the fattest tits in my headcanon). Just got to the part where the clans declare war on the capital.

Not sure which game I should play next. I have Berseria in my Steam library but I always hear mixed opinions on that game.

The main thing that’s disappointed me about these games is the music; the battle tracks are good but I don’t think the overall scores match up to a lot of Sakuraba’s other work (Baten Kaitos, Kid Icarus Uprising, Star Ocean, etc.)

Slap on the element skills and try out all your artes, if you find something unique use it 50 or so times to "unlock" it. Press R1+Attack to use the gun. It's a lot to take in at first but if you use her a lot, Patty is an absolute powerhouse, arguably a better caster than Rita with the downside of her Spells being random, plus there's a skill you can learn to heal TP (or fuck over your entire party randomly)

Symphonia was my first one. Abyss is easily the best in the series, the only place it fails is in the final boss department. Wait, no, that's not it - The Sefirot dungeons are a little bland. Wait, no, they have really good shortcuts to prevent lengthy backtracking, they reward exploration, and the combat encounters are really fun and properly pace themselves to teach you how to properly use Fonon fields if you still don't get it, somehow. So the only flaw with Abyss is the fact that it's locked to the 3ds to play the definitive version. Holy shit it's so much better than Vesperia, even if Estelle is one of the best girls in the series.

Patty is best after some Training since her best skills are behind Fire and Ice (the burning frying pan and Icicle spam in particular).
You also need one spell which has as little gambling as possible to set up Perfect forme with, there's some you get without much casting later, around when you have the skill (it's not long maybe 5-10 hours in).
She's absolutely bonkers on Overlimit, early on it pays off to send her flying with the rocket here and there just for the offchance that she drops with OL 4
I think if you combine that one with all the elementals you get her hidden "ultimate" which can trigger all kinds of random effects on the battle, like 10x EXP, 10x Grade, Full heal, half-def for the enemy, half def for (you) etc.

I replayed the game numerous times as a kid and i can still pick it up for a replay every few yrs. It's a very enjoyable game if you can adjust to the dated combat.

Game really needs an actual remaster to smooth out its combat and fix sheena's combat ability but im sure if it ever does happen they'll fuck it up

GC is the original and runs at 60 FPS
PS2 version has more content but is locked to 30 FPS because shitty hardware, and every port after is based off the PS2.

The PS3/Steam collection as far as i know is the best port of the PS2 version and put it in jp voices, or undub the GC version if you care about FPS more. If you run it with english audio you'll get 0 voice in skits, which at least to me feels completely alien
