Microsoft idiosyncrasies being synonymous with software has done terrible, irreparable damage to computing as a whole.

It's painful to think about where we could be technologically if Microsoft was never in the way.
Gaming used to be so magical, like playing Shenmue at release on the Dreamcast. Or playing Final Fantasy IX for the first time around the year 2000. Or, playing Secret of Mana on SNES in the 90s. Even up to the PS2 era, with games like GTA San Andreas or Vice City, and it's been gone ever since. San Andreas was probably the last game I played that still had that magic.
