What ruined the FPS genre was a simultaneous combination of hitboxes being made tighter and model accurate, in game distances becoming larger, movement becoming less predictable (for example, Quake had inertia, Overwatch does not) and consoles being a thing which means aim assist.
Netcode goes fucking haywire trying to cope with all this shit. Everyone jerks around all over the place with their tiny ass pixel perfect hitboxes, teleporting and snapping back and forth as connections desperately try to keep up. And what's there, to bring order to this chaos?
Controllers.
Just because of aim assist, these complete jokes of input devices made with the cheapest piece of shit potentiometers dredged from the depths of Alps' product catalog become the only tool that can make sense of what the fuck is actually happening on screen, react faster than a human bean and kill people. Who needs things like skill or the competitive spirit when you make the game play for you, and punish those who want to aim themselves?
