Like, that bit in the Lorgar primarch novel where Kor Phaeron realizes that Lorgar allowed himself to be mistreated as a kid despite being able to easily kill him. That he wasn't really grooming Lorgar, and he was always doing what he wanted.

I'm convinced that was going to be a big reveal in TEATD, but Abnett chickened out or was forced to avoid a shitstorm and keep it ambiguos.

For those that don't know it, there's a running theme in the BL books about the Emperor saying stuff to fuck and gaslit people when it suits him.
He saying that doesn't mean it was true, but it was curiosly effective in destroying Mortarion confidence.

Same when he possesed Vulkan and told Magnus that the events of Fury of magnus never happened.

The Emperor is not above playing mind game to get what he wants.
