Rare sort of did because they wanted to make games the world doesn't have and ended up doing nothing but working for companies who make the same games over and over again. Oh also when they changed DP to Starfox adventures.

Nintendo like the torpid lotus eaters they are, sat on what they could have owned for years until they needed more funds to do the shit Nintendo wanted them to do but wouldn't give them the funds to do. So they had to sell their shares, they really did want nintendo to buy them, they put a clause that allowed them to counterbid (which they took!).
