The asspull was the nuke. There was zero foreshadowing that a nuke was a threat to Meruem.

They exists in a world with magic and shit, we saw a guy take a direct headshot from a tank and had zero damage. Plus Meruem is portrayed as a super genius, so why would he declare war on the entire world if he wasn't nuke proof. It's the awful writing.
