Handgun rounds do sometimes instantly shut down a target. Some don't even if it's in the right spot. Killing someone with a handgun is typically a nightmarish event. Even point blank headshots can caused a few seconds of an unpleasant grunting noise. Actually that goes for any round that's not booking it past a velocity of around 2000 FPS, and 2500 PFS seem to be the sweet spot because the round visually explodes into bits when it hits a moist barrier. AK 7.62 x 39 for example are regarded as awful in terms of stopping power, but super excellent at barrier penetration. The 556NATO round typically has a velocity that's excess of that 2500 FPS velocity within 150 yards "battle range" and is extremely devastating if you look at the wounds they leave behind.
I don't like any pistol caliber round unless it is book at a minimum of 2000 FPS.
