Everything grows and changes over time, Anon. Nothing stays the same forever. We'll never get to interstellar travel if we stay in the Wild West, even if we have to endure a few decades of fent in the streets, it's a price worth paying in suffering and bodies to get us to the brighter future future generations will experience.

No one, honestly. Kirk was more charismatic than Picard or Riker, but the writing on TNG is hard to match by anyone, let alone an unproven 60s scifi show that producers constantly meddled with. TNG is the epitome of what Trek is supposed to represent, TOS is what Roddenberry was allowed to get past the suits. All that said, my favorite Trek character period is TOS Bones.
