It's actually intentionally ambiguous if Clive died. They've kept their mouths shut on it and haven't expanded on the ending at all. There are several indicators that could be interpreted as his survival. Even then, he was only put into that situation after he already GAPED the absolute fuck out of Ultima, so it was prior to that full absorption of Ultima that this happened.

Regarding FF5 though, I'm not against it (in fact I support it) but it would only be fair to address certain doubts.
