>represented a time when cartoons had an edge
>90’s cartoons rebelled against that idea by being as outlandish as possible and seeing what they could get away with
The reality isn't white and black. The 90s and early 2000s had many "sanitized" stuff and the 2010s had some edge. In 1992 you had Batman TAS with realistic guns and serious fights but in 1994 Spider-Man TAS had cops with sci-fi laser guns and spider-man wasn't allowed to directly beat his villains. In 2003 Deathstroke/Slade wasn't allowed to use his iconic guns and swords but in Teen Titans Go movie (2018) he use them. Also, in the early 2010s you got things like Mordecai looking at Margaret's tits and ass and Finn getting "raped" by LSP. Things aren't black and white.
>shows like Dexters Lab and Ren & Stimpy were enjoyed by both children and adults in the 90’s because of their adult humor
Don't try to rewrite history. Adult animation "fans" hated those shows back them. They become iconic overtime.
