The anime is all over the place, don't think about time passing really. The characters just stick around doing.. something? after supposedly retiring. I mean by the end of season 3 the newbie Special Week etc. has been there for something like 9 years? And in reality outside of specific rivalries a lot of these horses raced decades apart.
