Have you played Famicom Jump II? It has some tracks by the composer of Metal Max and a couple of dungeons are very Metal Max-y (sewer and factory settings)

It's basically the "dream team" Famicom JRPG

be careful to do things in the correct order in the late game or there is a softlock

But the sequel is better. Made by Chunsoft it's a wonder it hasn't been translated yet, it's one of the best Famicom RPGs that doesn't have a translation yet. I'm ready to bet it uses the same text compression method as DQ4 so the available space for text must be quite tight.
