Why does nobody ever talk about this game, or this franchise in general? Hands down one of the best RPGs on the SNES, and that's saying a lot.

Zero releases in the west. As for why that is you'd have to ask Data East to know for sure. They probably didn't see the money in bringing an RPG to the west where they were still making most of their money in arcades and hadn't really scored a home console hit yet

Metal Max 1 & 2 are fantastic games.

It's an RPG with tanks and guns, Americans would have loved it.

How's the NES game? I remember reading it was open ended and thought that sounded cool but I wasn't able to find a good/translated rom or something and just forgot about it

The NES game's been translated, it's the SNES game that hasn't because it's been "dibbed" by someone sitting on it for a decade.

I've always thought the claims that the games are "open world" and "you can do anything and go anywhere" to be wildly exagerated. In reality Metal Max has a structure very similar to Dragon Quest 2/3, the only difference being that in several cases you can fuck off and not even solve every quests before moving on if you want to. It's like, imagine if in DQ2 you weren't forced to recruit the Prince of Cannock before moving on but then you're still forced to do that boss fight in order to get the ship, that's the Metal Max philosophy. Only in the late games is there so real intended non linearility, similar to DQ2/3

Metal Max 2 feels even more linear in the first part of the game, but then once you get the boat you can truly go almost anywhere and do things in whatever order or not at all, though there is still a somewhat intended order.

Always feel like SFC RPGs are underwhelming when you compare the box art to the in-game presentation, the abstraction I can convince myself of with older RPGs doesn't carry over as much. I think I just find 16-bit graphics quite garish and ugly.

If it got a western release with that mound on the cover art, it would be in the top 10.

I've played them all except the newest one on 7th gen console/Steam; and except the first one on DS which is played with the touchpad because fuck that casual shit

Metal Saga on PS2 was a super comfy game however the balancing is horrible. The game is balanced in such a way that 1) if you're behind on lvls compared to your current area you'll be getting a TONS more exp to catch up and 2)once you're a few levels higher than what is intended for an area you're literally invicible (enemies won't even damage you at all). This combined with the freedom of movement the world map offers is a terrible thing: all you have to do is walk a few steps in the wrong direction, fight 4-5 fights, then go back to the "right" direction and you'll be invicible.

1, 2 and Returns are the bests. 3, 2R and 4 are okay as well but they reek of modern anime / modern RPG shit. The thing I enjoyed the most about 4 is that it punishes the players who stick to their comfort zone: if you're betting everything on multi-hit weapons like 2R and 3, you're going to do okay, but it's not the best solution. Instead if you're willing to experiment you'll be rewarded with something that truly breaks the game though I'm not going to spoil what.

Appreciate the writeup. The one on steam was the one I was kind of curious about, but I might check out 4 too. I've always had a weird aversion to portable games but I guess if I'm just emulating it anyway it doesn't matter.

The typical way Metal Max does open-ended is basically that you get a small open-world area with lots of options with a chokepoint challenge. When you pass the chokepoint you get into another bigger open world. Like in MM2R (I haven't played SFC MM2) you have the initial western area chokepointed by a dungeon with the boss Skunks at the end, then you get a bigger open world with the boss Cagliostro chokepointing, then you can go all the way to the endgame. Most things in between are theoretically optional besides travelling itself.

In MMR (the SFC remake of MM1) you have a tutorial area chokepoint, then the game has a choice of big optional skip that can take you right to endgame or a relatively linear path of challenges, but there is a hidden piece of information you need to actually enter the endgame and you need to search the entire game world to find it so it's really a replay thing.

Can you battle Noah in MMR2? I found his battle theme in the OST but never found him in the game proper.

It might have been used as the theme for one of a few battles that might just be alluding to Noah? I don't really pay attention to music that closely myself.
Anonymous No.11940640 [Report]
>>11940605
I didn't explore the whole world back when I played it, so there's a chance a superboss hidden in a corner somewhere plays that theme if that's the case.

The /v/ jr-ists of /vr/ are spreading ritual spam (i.e. auster) and obvious flamebait, and other forms of /v/ermin garbage, accross the board to the dismay of the jannies' apathy.
It's likely going to keep being this way until they open the lame-o applications again.

The first one is the best RPG on famicom. Easily.
And the second is easily in the top 5 best RPGs on Super Famicom.
The lack of enthusiasm for these games is a fucking mystery to me.

Have you played Famicom Jump II? It has some tracks by the composer of Metal Max and a couple of dungeons have Metal Max-y music
be careful to do things in the correct order in the late game or there is a softlock
