Why does Taeshi hate her own characters so much? Mike is cursed to suffer at all times and in all ways, no matter how much causality must warp to facilitate it. Taeshi hexed Sue to have spun-glass bones and terrible luck. Daisy is "it's so over" personified. Even Lucy "parasite" Whitecat is constantly miserable because she's insane, hyper-fixated and delusional.

>Face it, your stupid "best friend" doesn't even like you
Fuck your pottery Taeshi

I believe Taeshi really forced herself to think of Mike as this master manipulator who only deserves scorn or else she would see the direction of the comic and recoil. Imagine being the main force behind Lucyspace and ending up a victim of it

>Lucy needs you and only you, how dare you not act on her best interest
>Also how dare you not cut her off if you wanted to have a relationship with someone else, that's giving her hope!
Taeshi your shit's all retarded and "emotional cheating" is an absurb unhinged concept. Up yours, enjoy your masturbatory therapy replacement

I'm not forgetting, that's my whole point. Lucy came back and suddenly both she and Mike are resentful assholes who keep screaming at their friends for no reason. All character nuance and development was dropped like a hot rock to make room for worse-written rehashes of stuff from volumes 1-3. See: >>150427104

That could be explained in a sane and sensible manner by addressing that Mike and Lucy are horrible for each other, that mere proximity sends them both spiraling into hair-trigger anxiety and paranoia that destroys their self-control. But that's NOT addressed, and instead it's framed like everything will be fine if they just make up and make out, as if that won't end with them starting to hate each other all over again.

>We can't make the suicide attempt serious you guys! It would be too much to handle for the cast
>We can use it to torture Mike tho it was very much his fault he literally carried Lucy and threw from the roof, fuck Mike I wish he was dead GODDAMN
>btw I've seen you people are hating on Mike too much, if appreciate it if you tone it down because it's actually NUANCED
>now if you excuse me I have to write an author comment where I joke about Mike being aborted retroactively fixing everyone's lives, as a joke

I think all the major problems with this comic, the real "what the fuck are you doing?" moments, stem from the same root: the Paulo Showa Era of Vol. 5 was an incredibly stable local minima. All the main plot threads had been conclusively wrapped up, every character left in Roseville more-or-less had what they wanted, and the few potential spark-points left were low-stakes and revolved around secondary or tertiary characters rather than Lucy & Mike.

So the only solution Taeshi could figure out was to (re)introduce problems - and she wasn't patient enough to set them up carefully, because the comic had already been in the Pauloshow for most of an in-universe year, and out of universe an entire volume and SEVERAL years. Hence, Taeshi started inelegantly dynamiting forwards: bringing Lucy back with nary a scratch and twice the hostile disdain, dragging Paulo's character arc backwards to being a jackass fuckboy, having Mike get all depressed and start lashing out again, and retconning Sandy into a vapid mean girl who LOVES the glitz and glamour of being a model.

EF is especially bizarre and infuriating in context, because the preceding chapters undermine it and the later chapters ignore it. It's just a surreal, nonsensical intermission that damages every part of the story, then ends up back at the status quo; one could easily simply skip it and it's immediate aftermath entirely and the comic would only be better for it.

Both before and after, Sandy calls and texts Mike and he seems pretty happy about it, but is still kind of depressed and moody in general. Sandy putting more effort in, only for Mike to feel disillusioned with his LDR and realize he's sunk-costing something that doesn't really make him happy, doesn't need Sandy to have cheated on him.

Both before and after, Mike feels guilty and resentful towards/about Lucy, and worries she'll spiral; while Lucy feels guilty and resentful towards/about Mike, and might be spiraling. Their dynamic shifting from anger and lashing out at their friends, towards guilt/depression/loneliness, doesn't need them to have made out in the snow.

Both before and after, Mike and Paulo are simultaneously supportive friends who want the best for each other and are worried when the other is stressed or lonely, AND jealous and backstabby rivals clashing over their drastically different attitudes towards girls. That's always been their dynamic, and it definitely doesn't need them yelling at each other over Sandy AGAIN.

>Jessica's awful views of her friends are ignored, forgiven, and lavished in praise
I fucking hate this.

This really feels like Taeshi saying "fuck you, audience". Especially with the whole fanfic and oh-em-gee bit.

To which I say Fuck you too, Taeshi. This chapter sucks, and exemplifies several of the worst problems with your writing: the asshole gets away with everything scot-free via gaslighting and emotional manipulation, David exists, characters accepting being bullied in the name of "friendship", resetting interesting developments for no reason, characters suddenly being stupid, and your garbage sense of humor. Deus-ex-machina-ing your asshole characters Lucy, Paulo, Jessica, Augustus out of the consequences of their own actions isn't funny, it just sucks, especially when contrasted with the way you pour the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune upon other characters.
