I have a question about the comic's universe.

Taeshi insists (or at least she insisted) that BCB is not a furry webcomic. If it is not a furry webcomic, and it should be read more like the graphic novel 'Maus' (in which the dfferent species should be seen as stand-ins for humans), then why's there stuff like 'cats and dogs cant reproduce with each other' and all the random magical creatures like Yashi and the talking birds and stuff?

If they are humans, they should be able to reproduce with each other no matter the species they are represented as.

I can only hope this happens, and the thing that makes me think it will happen is the fact that Lucy kicked Mike in the chest for basically zero reason. It's pretty obvious to me what Taeshi is trying to do. She's trying to tell a story with Mike that mirrors Lucy's somewhat.
He's chronically depressed. Through a series of misadventures, some of which are his own fault, some of which he's the victim, he becomes more socially isolated and even more depressed. This culminates in some big major horrible travesty like maybe another suicide, blah blah.
The only problem here is that Mike is a boy. People don't have the same sympathy for depressed boys that they do for depressed girls, not even other boys. Nobody likes a sadboy faggot. Nobody cares. Whatever sympathy Mike ever had is going to be killed the more depressed he's shown to be.
In a way, this gender disparity is a blessing and a curse. I think women's depression gets more support, but in a way is more enabled by that support. Men get less support but sometimes the remedy is just pushing yourself through.

I hate to concur with a "muh Goldie" schizopost but I'm starting to feel this too. Back in Double Down you had Daisy talking to Mike about how when you're too accommodating it creates this impossible-to-maintain expectation of niceness from you that ends up leading to resentment on both sides. I thought that was a great description of Mike's biggest problem. Post-volume-1 Abbey is generally much more effective than Post-volume-1 Mike.
