I know that was supposed to be how it worked then but it doesn't really make it any less retarded, especially because in previous times people used shield and armors. Sure I get that armor would get in the way but disposable armor used when marching forward would have been useful to avoid unnecessary casualties before it's your "turn" to shoot.
