The schizo theories thread on /v/ just got archived before I could finish typing up my theory so here it goes
Kris is a Darkner and Ralsei is a Lightner.
Don't you think it's odd that we're half way through the story and still don't know why the Dreemurrs adopted a human child? This was a major plot point in Undertale. But in Deltarune it makes no sense. Where are all the other humans on the surface?
What I think is that Asgore got caught up in some Dark Fountain Fullmetal Alchemist type bullshit to try and bring Dess back using his Shadow Crystal (maybe he actually got drunk and ran her over lol). And in the process ended up losing his own youngest Biological son (Ralsei), then as a compromise got a new son in the form of Kris, the Darkner. This must've happened early on in both their childhoods though. Since Kris seems to have been raised in the Light World.
We know Dark Worlds have the power to raise the dead from Gerson. We don't know what happens to them when you try to take them back to the Light World. That could very well be exactly how the Knight was created. Dess is only the Knight to the same extent that Asriel is Flowey in Undertale.
Why does Kris "need" the human soul (according to the phone call)?
So he doesn't petrify in the Light World.
Why does Ralsei insist he's "not real" despite refusing to explain what object he himself is? He's lying. If he was a Darkner and therefore not real as he claims, how could he know what objects Lancer and the Queen are? How is he supposed to know anything about the Light World if he's never been there before and can't go because he's not real? None of what he says makes any sense. Also why is Ralsei alone? What kinda prince has no parents? We know Darkners still need to have parents in order to exist, just look at Lancer. Even if Dark Worlds are just "created" when someone stabs the earth in sub-zero darkness. A world and history is retroactively tacked on to the backend of them.
