The whole concept of "self inserting" has gotten completely out of hand. Escapist fantasy is hardly a new concept but it used to be the power fantasy was to dream of being something you wished you were. Now nobody can even get into a story if the lead character isn't "exactly like me." When it aspirational fantasy it made sense because the character we dreamed of being was the cool strong and intelligent badass. Now since it's insertion and the MC has to be "literally me" we have to force too many work arounds and "cheats." Characters used to be forces of personality but now they're blank slates. People would like someone with charisma and strength and courage, but now it's the most banal and basic of virtues being treated as the highest.
