Yeah it was. Multiplayer games weren't designed as slot machines, """"DLC"""s we're actual worthwhile addons for games. Overwhelming majority of games released in a working state, full conversion mods and modscenes in general we're huge and supported by devs, there was a huge AA space with shit tons of risk taking games, T E C H N O L O G Y was being pushed in every direction, games that copied other games got the "clone" stamp instead of the "-like" stamp and we're scoffed unless they had exceptional quality. Creativity and uniqueness was the main pursuit. Multiplayer was designed around player skill and had high skill ceilings instead of creating artificially low skill ceilings to keep engagement up.
Sure we had our share of bad games but some years, like 1998 dropped classic after classic. We still have good games now but it's swimming in an ocean of shit while I feel it used to be the other way around. AA development kinda died off and everything went to shit.
