The place has been constantly destroyed by muslims and also rebuilt by muslims. It doesn't mean the same things to everyone who follows the faith. Some care about tradition, others just want to optimize the flow (and increase the capacity) of people during pilgrimage and that's the main reason it is shaped this way.
