I don't think the Soul is the player, I don't know about you guys, but I'm not a pixelated red heart in real life, maybe you guys are and I'm the weird one here, but I do think the player, aka me, is clearly controlling the Soul and using it as a way to interact with the world of Deltarune. I think of it as a remote control vehicle.

As for what the Soul actually is? I have no idea, maybe it's a sort of generic Soul created by someone with the express purpose of being controlled by the player, or maybe it's Kris' soul that we have hijacked, who knows.
