Chess is a game of odds for both moves and mental states. So to get good at chess, you have to get good at rough calculations, cause-and-effect, and manipulation. People don't think straight when their king is constantly getting pressed on by coordinated attacks. Fortunately, there already exists research at the crossroads of statistics and psychology called "Game Theory". There are multiple free lectures and walked-through puzzles for you to learn from. And if pretty colors and movements dazzle your eyes more than walls of text and charts, No Game No Life is an anime almost entirely about game theory.
If you want to work on your rough calculations and pattern recognition, I suggest playing shorter and less complex games like poker, cribbage, and hearts. There are a lot fewer moves than chess, which makes card counting easier, but you still get the human psychology element. I also recommend reading a lot of history, psychology, and philosophy books to get a better understanding of cause-and-effect and following things through to their ends.
