It's really not the same. Far from it. These "fast paced movement shooters" are all about twitch aim and low TTK and sliding. Oh boy, that retarded sliding. They barely take any skill in terms of movement because they have to be console input friendly. Quake 3 and related games are about map knowledge, item placement, knowing what weapon to use in what situation and moving around has a high skill ceiling on it's own. You have to time every jump and turn perfectly while maintaining game sense at a high pace or you'll lose all momentum. Modern "fast paced shooters" let you pick up the momentum in a heartbeat and don't require any thought about your weaponry outside your preferred main weapon. Everything is also hitscan so forget about leading your shots or putting any thought in crosshair placement beyond your enemies head.
There really is no comparison to make between the old and new shooters.
