You'd have interest groups form pretty quickly, i think. Some to fight back, some to take advantage, some to give in and be subjugated. I think to a certain level people would come together, but in those groups rather than as a united planet. There'd likely be wars between nations as leadership and public opinions shift and gravitate towards opposing stances - always strike the traitor before the enemy, and everyone not aligned to your view is a traitor to humanity.
All in all, i think things would get much, much worse.
