Irony is that Blasphemous was criticized for that since the entire game the Penitent One was shown legitimately religious only to end with the DLC plotline with godslaying.
Blasphemous 2 fixed that by doubling down the Gnosticism approach and establishing a (possibly) good deity whose power weakened as people prayed to the wrong one which retroactively justifies a lot of his actions.
Not sure if the devs actually planned that all along or realized the mess they wrote when they implemented the DLCs.
