do u make tv shows and movies for a living? because i can't imagine caring about such issues unless i was in the industry, and i'm not. i'm just a fan, and i enjoy the various aspects of star trek. but to try to answer your question, just because the older series (which you claim are a "more Trek-like format" and "not on the same tier") tended toward being overwrought and stuffy, doesn't mean that's the "right" way to do things. from your "industry insider" point of view, that targeted a demographic that is now getting older, living on a fixed income, and passing away, and therefore you should be motivated to dispense with your viewpoint. i'm not a big fan of the effete parlor room drama episodes, or when they're social workers in space, and tend not to rewatch those episodes. besides, star trek already suffers from widespread internal inconsistency, including the shows you idolize, so why can't you roll with these punches? wow, what an essay. i guess the coffee is finally kicking in
