He is obliquely making a claim that because it takes place during the Berman trek period it counts as classic trek. In theory, you could make a philosophical argument that in-universe timeline is as valid as production timeline to determine what constitutes "classic."
Unfortunately, his behavior means that this point is purely moot/academic, because it's an argument made in bad faith (not of the heart)
