NGE is like the earliest example of a creative making a sci-fi adventure series where he trauma dumped his struggles with depression and suicide onto the audience, but it fucking worked because it didn't stray away from the character drama or the action, and it had the balls to point the finger at Shinji (Anno) himself (can't get that kind of self-awareness anymore). Anno is an autistic faggot but for better or worse, he's a big weeb who knows his stuff (at least when he's not hiding from doing his fucking job)

You also have Evangelion itself having a good number of commonalities with Star Wars. Both are extremely iconic and revolutionary in their aesthetics, atmosphere, drama, setting technology, and the incorporation of religious fantasy and the sacred into 20th-century science fiction (in which they share a genre). And both share a lot of motifs, presumably from Gainax taking Star Wars influence, such as Gendo/Shinji paralleling Vader/Luke, or picrel resembling the original 1970s Star Wars poster.
