Dess was meant to be the 3rd hero. She was supposed to be a dark sword mage.

But this time around, she traded places with Kris, who was meant to be the Knight, as evident by them being a fucking knight with sword and shield and all in the Dark Worlds. Dess just took their role so they could then take the Vessel's role.

Also, in Chapter 2, Susie says that in Dragon Blazers 2, supposedly the sister in the party gets sick. That could also point towards the idea that the original plan was for Noelle and Dess to be on this adventure together.
