Nuclear weapons are the country level version of us having firearms.

I think they want it, just for the simple reason that if they have it, they can push their adversaries around.
The unintended consequence will be that everyone else in the area will instantly arm up too if the Iranians come out and say they have them, because they're just stupid enough to use them.
