This reminds me of the 1994 carribian cup, which had a similar thing happen during a soccer tournament. The rule was that if you scored a goal during overtime it counted as 2 points instead of 1, to make an overtime win slightly better than a regular win.

However, to qualify for the next match Barbados' team needed to beat Grenada by at least 2 points. Barbados was leading by 2 until the last minute, when Grenada scored, making it 2-1. Barbados then deliberately scored an own goal to make it 2-2, hoping to send the game to overtime where they had a chance to score the double points goal.

Grenada then tried to score an own goal to make it 3-2, which had them losing but still advancing to the next round. Barbados started guarding the opposite goal, so Grenada started trying to score normally and just win the match, but Barbados managed to block them on both sides, which sent the game to overtime. Barbados then managed to score the double point goal and advanced to the next round.
