Don't ask me for a source, but I am pretty sure that Kumazaki and other developers from HAL had to make a statement confirming that content introduced in side modes and spinoff games are canon. Maybe not all of it, but a good lot of it is fair game. Characters like Galacta Knight/Aeon Hero, and Dark Meta Knight's involvement with the plot of Triple Deluxe, are too important to write-off. Dededetour probably has the most credence for being canonical, given that the devs have written posts about it and reference its events in official artwork.

Actually, after skimming a few articles, I found out that Kumazaki had written about King D-Mind. Anyway, point is, and in my opinion, taking Kirby's narratives at face value and saying "this is happening" is a good philosophy to have. Not sure why there was always such a debate around these matters, anyway. Not saying that about you specifically, Anon, mind you. There are several different directions that HAL can take the plot in, and I would like to believe that they wish to explore as many of those threads as possible.
