A video of the whole Giygas fight was my first exposure to Earthbound, and yet when I got to this part, I still found it to be kino even though it'd been completely spoiled.
Genuinely, how did Itoi do it?

Is it because you have to call for help a number of times to win? Even then that comparison doesn't make sense because you're calling upon the human souls instead of the people you meant along your journey like in Earthbound. The second part of Asriel's fight in the Pacifist Route would've been a better comparison. I don't get why people think they're similar either. Is it really just because they're both scary final bosses at the end of a mostly whimsical and fun adventure?

I know. Doesn't make me dislike the games, of course. On the contrary it lets me appreciate them a lot more by being able to understand how Toby was inspired to make his games.
I do wish we get some scenes with the player in Deltarune like some of the scenes in Earthbound. I can already think of a few:
>the scene in Lumine Hall where Ness's thoughts are broadcasted would work really well for Kris since they're silent the whole game
>asking for the player's name one more time in a later Chapter to fully hammer in the fact that we're separate from Kris
>(You) prayed for them.
I can't fucking wait to see if Toby can surpass Earthbound's kino.
