If you buy a H&K USP45, I predict that you will end up with a good pistol that you would like.

Do you want a Mk.23 just for having a Mk.23? Then hell yes, that'll be a good reason for having one.
Do you want to handload a LOT of spicy hot .45 Super and run that in the Mk.23? Then yeah, it's gonna be good at that too, it's an absolute fucking tank of a pistol.

Do you want a handy full-sized .45 but which also isn't way oversized? You would probably want the USP instead, and mind that the USP is already a pretty damn rugged and well put together pistol, you aren't going to wear one of those out easily either. You can even run .45 Super in a USP with a heavier recoil spring.

Trump and his cabinet are probably gonna be too protectionist to do anything about that, might as well get some of the NFA stuff sorted while there's the good opportunity to do so. 922(r) can still be fixed later.

Kind of? But by the 1980s .45 was almost only used for sidearms, which don't see very heavy use by default, so in my opinion there's no functional problem with .45 as a service pistol cartridge.

I like 9mm too, but if the US waited even longer, and if it wasn't for NATO standardization, then the army could have done fine by adopting the H&K USP in .45, it'd have been easily as good as the Beretta 92.
