Besides, you don't actually mean (((nuclear family))), where the children branch off and form their own isolationist enclaves. You mean extended family, where a family homestead or small village provides security for the very young and very old.
You need some form of safety net to catch the elderly that don't have children, or have their children die or are otherwise indisposed.
