The entire PC market was fucking dying because of companies lile Microsoft and EA pulling the most horrendous policies and DRM imaginable. Microsoft even tried to push their own version of paid online on PC with Games For Window Live. Valve also got turbo fucked by Sierra at this time. The PC physical market committed suicide and Gaben arrived with something new that also allowed them out patch games properly (which was the original function of Steam).
