I started on mostly gen 2 but that era from late 90s to emerald was different. They were built like JRPGs you could have a shared experience of. The cartridge itself was like a copy of your personality, the team you had, the pokemon you binned. You could take this cartridge out and just pass it to someone and you were delving into their own world, no internet no algorithms nothing just a physical cart and standalone game save. Something was very different to me with gen 4. The introduction of wifi killed the series to me. Yeah it was cool but the entire philosophy of pokemon was off. The real 90s kids here probably have this memory the strongest thats probably why they genwun the most.
