A rival who actually wants to win. Modern Pokemon is clearly globalist. They probably just figure fuck it, let's get paid. It could be worse. And the games do have merit. But the tone of the old games was better. Very little has improved over the decades. Some sim elements, graphics. But there is far less soul. It's almost like ChatGPT is behind new development and new writing. Breeding is basically the best new feature added to pokemon, and it come out in Gold I think. Double and triple battles are ok.

Kanto has the best map of any generation. It's structured like a SNES RPG and has a fantastic DQ3-like mid game where player party choices and an open design allow you to route your progression differently/make meaningful decisions. It also has really good dungeon design and fantastic pacing. The problems are that mon variety is bad, movepools suck, too many things are finite, and there's a bunch of annoying bugs that make combat less fair.

The ShinPokeRed hack really makes the game shine simply by fixing bugs, making the game run better, and giving players an out from getting screwed by finite resources. The combat is still a bit primitive, but it's a damn fine game.

It has nothing to do with politics. They stopped doing the shithead rival because it was getting old. Wally + alt gender rival was built as a twist to catch you off guard. Barry was designed to irritate instead of antagonize. Bianca was a curveball by failing halfway in, Cheren was an attempt to approach Blue from a different angle, and N was an attempt to do a more typical RPG rival. Hugh was shithead again with a new twist. Hau was an intentional misdirect and point of contrast with Gladion. Hop was a (poorly implemented) mirror of Rose. Nemona is Barry-like: meant to piss you off by smothering your agency while being a "friend" who doesn't respect you.

The only real failure was Gen 6, holy fuck.

The problem old people have with Pokemon is that the only serious change is adding 1000+ new pokemon. Keychains and shit. We wanted a Pokemon world like Skyrim. I miss when pokemon focused on being an RPG. The exploration and subtle hints were great. Gold and Silver are really missing the additional paths. Like the power plant and circling around through diglett cave.

I'll still forever be mad they didn't give psychic a proper counter in gen 1. Obviously, Ghost was meant to beat psychic, but lick is so weak anyway. A real ghost move would have helped for sure. Even more so If bug resisted psychic and bugs all got a decent bug move, it'd be such a perfect game. Cause they game has a counter to the gym leader of the town right near by. Misty there's Oddish/Bellsprout, Surge there's Diglett, Erika there's Vulpix/growlithe, Blaine is surrounded by water for tentacruel, Koga, the safari zone is full of counters. Sabrina? Nothing. There's nothing near by to help you beat her.

Yea, bug beating dark gave it relevance too. Actual ghost moves like shadow ball helped. I just wish there was a fixed version of gen 1. They could have made it so you can move tutor or get twineedle onto other bugs, or even fixed the ghost glitch in stadium or something. I love red and blue as an RPG though. Dude Pokemon was amazing as an RPG compared to almost everything else on Game Boy. You're also ignoring the whole multiplayer component that made it huge. Pokemon wouldn't have gotten the show and card game if the game hadn't already succeeded in Japan and convinced Nintendo to make those. No it didn't have as much story as the comics (which I agree are cool), but the game is still a great adventure to play through and felt huge for a Game Boy game.

I always enjoyed the feel in genwun that Pokemon were some mysterious thing that just happened to also exist in the wild along with everything that exists in the real world.
Normal animals existed.
Ironically Pokemon world building was better when they explained so much less and let your imagination fill in all the blanks.
The new games are so thoroughly built that there is no room for imagine yet the games can't escape feeling flat.

You've got to keep in mind we had used game stores everywhere back then. Or at least I did. I didn't get Final Fantasy Legend until many years after it was released. Pokemon was way more interesting to me as a kid, though I liked both. It was also a more impressive game in terms of scale (as it should be, being a game released over 6 years later in Japan). The game was so old, being released December 1989, that Tajiri actually talks about it being the game that showed him the Game Boy could handle larger scale games.

Which really is simply not true. One or two that were only sold in second hand shops isn't plenty and isn't around. Pokemon was a great game and was incredibly accessible when it came out. The style of game was so successful in the west it did very much change market trends.

Not a compfag but I think EVs specifically are interesting in theory, but their implementation sucks raw donkey dick. I like the idea that you can train your pokemon to be competent in specific ways, but everything about it is obfuscated to hell and basically pointless (common Game Freak design choice).

That's definitely helpful, though it still sucks that you need to grow berries to undo redundant EV growth.
I'm no game designer, but if I could redesign EVs, I'd just make them a stat you gain on level up, and you can have a training facility that lets you spend those points on a specific stat. I mostly just hate that you passively gain it without even trying.

Yeah, originally the setting was just.. Japan, with pokemon being sort of Kami/Kamuy, sort of mythological versions of otherwise mundane things (plus then just literally mythological beings) that exist alongside actual animals etc. Like, the Lt. Surge thing is because the town he was in is based off Yokohama, which has a US navy base. This stuff seems to have decreased gen III onwards, but really only ended completely once Pokemon had a game set outside Japan, then pokemon began to be mostly just replacements for pets and animals with zero indication there was anything more to them or that they had any higher intelligence (barring literally Arceus, I guess).

It looks like the Lets Go games removed the Lightning American title for Lt. Surge and changed it to Lightning Lieutenant, so I guess that Gen VII onwards there's just going to be no more IRL reference.

I played these on a gameboy emulator when they were new and dropped them. I could never take anyone seriously who said they were into pokemans

There will never be anything like red/blue again. It did such a good job of giving you a world that felt alive. So when you get to the power plant, and there's no trainers, it feels different. It's subtle, but the game is telling you that you are somewhere most trainers don't go. It showed not told.

It really tried to give players the cool things they wanted, instead of asking them to time sink into them. I think Gold and Silver are good RPGs, but not good pokemon games. Gen 3 is flipped, good pokemon games, but lazy one note RPGs.

Rocket hadn't even managed to get the silph scope out of silph co. by the time they were defeated. If anything Giovanni was a bit of a chump, he loses to you 3 separate times by the end of gen 1.

The Shininess was not result of Team Rocket's experiment, the golden Magikarp was just chilling in Lake of Rage till it was forced to evolve by Team Rocket's signal.

And then they stormed Radio tower to affect entire region, which was stopped only by 10yo boy, just as in RBY.

For how aimless and lost Rockets were in GSC due to lack of proper leadership, their plan was actually pretty scary and would end in massive chaos as Pokemon all over the region would go berserk. Funnily enough, despite all of it, Rockets just wanted to attract attention of their old boss.

I started on mostly gen 2 but that era from late 90s to emerald was different. They were built like JRPGs you could have a shared experience of. The cartridge itself was like a copy of your personality, the team you had, the pokemon you binned. You could take this cartridge out and just pass it to someone and you were delving into their own world, no internet no algorithms nothing just a physical cart and standalone game save. Something was very different to me with gen 4. The introduction of wifi killed the series to me. Yeah it was cool but the entire philosophy of pokemon was off. The real 90s kids here probably have this memory the strongest thats probably why they genwun the most.

Pokemon was designed for the 90s and the link cable, hence the different versions, the emphasis on trade, etc
I remember beating the Elite 4 in Pearl with like a Sceptile and a Gengar and such that I had gotten off the GTS, and it just felt hollow
Getting any particular Pokemon was no longer part of the challenge
