Long story short:
Economy is in the gutter and people can't afford spending 70-90 bucks on the monthly AAA when the 1% keeps getting richer and everyone else keeps getting poorer.
The utter destruction of the middle class by the hands of the "elite" means late stage capitalism has entered an irreversible collision course with total collapse, said elite is of course barricaded in their ivory towers where the echochamber of "line must go up" is still shouted all day every day but nobody realizes that the line can only go up if the lower classes have money for that.
Steam being a storefront specializes in all sorts of videogames and not just AAA, which is why it can thrive, by selling games people can afford, games that are also operating outside of the sphere of the AAA elites, and taking a cut out of anything that sells, as such it's able to actually make money while EA, Ubisoft, M$ and whoever else is emhorraging money by making games noboby wants or can even afford.
>inb4 B...But gamepass
Nobody's buying a glorified doorstop and paying yet another monthly subscription for games they won't even look sideways, people are already struggling with their netflix, amazon and whatever subscriptions, same goes for Sony and Nintendo shooting themselves in the foot yet again with their unbridled greed, even the new generations of kids would rather play genshin or fortnite on their phones than buying a Switch 2, the times have changed and the old gods are no longer appealing to the young generation, new gods have taken their place and their churches are barely held together by balding millennials on their way out.
Valve has no issue with any of that, Valve is just a storefront you can install on any PC, any OS, no strings attached, no proprietary software, no empty SD cards with just a code to download a game to your actual SD card, it just works.
And this is the so called "free" market you people so desperately worship after all, aren't you happy?
