I'm not sure if it was "the point" but I ended up liking that the early manga (and season 1) implies the story is a character drama, but then starts getting increasingly longer timeskips to both show and tell you that it couldn't possibly matter across that span of time. I don't think I would have liked it if it had been a more paint-by-numbers series, can't speak for other anons though.
