I honestly don't know too much about cats, I just remember reading an explanation as to why cats do that, basically they view their humans as one big, dumb, clumsy cat so one theory is that they are trying to encourage/teach you to hunt just like they do their kittens.
it's weird with animals in general, what would naturally be predator/prey end up viewing each other as a sort of family if they live and especially grow up together. I don't know what happens if the food runs out though.
