He's right up there with the hack who made the joker movie when I was thinking of examples.
By the time The Return came out, it was trite, because it was perfectly Lynchian, while the original series is still unmatched to this day because it transcends the niche of surrealism. It's Lynch that you can watch with your grandma, and that's infinitely more valuable to the medium than being just another masturbatory wankfest that tries to be impenetrable but is actually just juvenile.
However I did like it a lot desu, it was just disappointingly typical.
