If you were around during the launch (when 90% of this board wasn't born yet), New Vegas was seen as a pretty good if slightly underwhelming expansion pack for Fallout 3. It wasn't until YouTube "essays" memed the game for its music and its most shallow aspects that the general perception of the game changed. Like most fanbases, most people who claim to love it have never actually played it or finished it. It's just a meme now.
