I have a largely shotgun/melee build. I knock guys down with the shotgun perk or a leg sweep then go to town with a chainsaw. From afar, I use the antimaterial rifle with AP rounds.

I've had no problem soloing Quarry Junction and the Brotherhood bunker on this run but the last fight is just fucking me. I don't have a nuke anymore because I used it on the president.

It's basically impossible to due to so NV due the constant critters and combat, so close ranged companions like Veronica are way better.

in original jsawyer, he nerfed the damage all companions did slightly because they make the game easy as fuck. DT is universally unchanged and only a couple of the higher-end armors got an additional DR stat. Most enemies are the same as they are unmodded.

Even melee companions see a nerf to their damage for some reason, but generally they are better because they don't waste ammo. The two most broken companions for the Jsawyer mod are upgraded ED-E and Rex (with Rey's brain). In the Jsawyer mod, everyone has a bit more armor, but less health. While I'm sure the Rex upgrade was nerfed, he fucking tears through people once he has Rey's brain, and he has pretty high DPS. ED-E has modest damage but doesn't need special ammo and carries some nice bonuses.

The most fun I ever had playing New Vegas was a half-modded run in the Jsawyer Ultimate Edition. I say half modded because while there were mods, I tried to keep them classic Fallout friendly. So my companion limit was determined by my Charisma stat (divided by 2 rounded down), which meant Charisma was useful. I also included some classic Fallout weapons and armors. It was a zero death, no reloading run. Makes most encounters nail biting, and it makes you appreciate every consumable you find. I also added a mod that prevented fast travel unless you had a special craftable consumable, as well as a fast travel mod that spawned caravans in key locations you could pay to travel with. It made the early game a bit more impactful because I had to choose what loot to take from a location and what to leave behind. I remember going back to the Repcon rocket factory after clearing to gather crafting supplies for weapon repair kits and satchel charges. It was great, really helped me get into the scavenging mood.

Unfortunately, both my runs ended prematurely. Once was in the Seira Madre when I panicked after killing Dog and the casino blew up with me in it. The second run ended when I when to Zion canyon and got 1 shot by a big giant mantis that did 216 fucking damage to me. I got kinda pissed after that so I stopped. I'll give it another try in a few months.

This is completely wrong. The Merc outfits (charmer, adventurer, etc) all have their DT raised to 4 (from 1 in the base game). This was likely done to nerf early shotguns that don't use slugs (20 ga. buckshot damage = 4*[number-of-pellets] ). With this armor buff, buckshot rounds are complete garbage against even lightly armoured foes. It also nerfs the power of the 9mm SMG early on. Because everyone has less health, each shot that goes through armor seems to hit a lot harder, when in reality you just have less health to tank the hits.

So to be fair, not everyone's armour increases, by the DT of many light armours DOES increase for the early game. Once you reach mid-game, though, it's effectively as hard as it was in vanilla.

Yeah it's kinda too punishing. There's too many random things in the game that can one-shot you like the super giant mantises and various mines and traps, and even raiders scoring a couple crits in a row if you're not careful. But the no-death rule means every fight is an ordeal, and you'll be planning your encounters a lot more. I feel like it forces you to engage with the game world more, because if you die, that's it for the run. I also appreciate it because it increases the values of some perks. Light Step is kind of a trash perk because you can just reload if you step on a mine and blow up, or reload if you step on a bear trap and get crippled. But in a run where you're not allowed to die, it becomes one of the best perks in the game, and makes completing Dead Money far more achievable.

I like the "you can only save after sleeping 8 hours" rule, but I fear it'd make the game tedious. You lose progress, but not that much, and it'd be easy to constantly sleep 8 hours a day. I think no matter how you do a run like this (zero death or only 8hr-sleep saves), losing progress is gonna suck. So if losing progress is gonna suck, I'd rather each encounter be more tense because you have more to lose if you die.

permadeath/hardcore runs change the game entirely. in the beginning they sound really tedious and awful, but they become very cathartic rather quickly. you have to play very differently and the games challenges look a hell of a lot different. the funny thing is once you get good, its very rare you'll find yourself dying in a firefight or major battle - and if it happens you're already mentally prepared for it. Just like in real life and what it would be in the ingame world, 95% of your deaths will be from really stupid shit when you took an unnecessary risk, were acting reckless, or got complacent and activated a trap or fell off a cliff/building. It makes random encounters like ambushes so much more dangerous as well.

The fact death has an actual penalty and theres real risk makes a lot of these old "easy" games really enjoyable, challenging, and rewarding. A less hardcore version that i know exists for most bethesda games if you want to ease yourself into it is death alternative, where you lose all of your held gear and money on death and wake up in a random area.

If youve never tried a permadeth run on a game before you really should give it a shot. adds a lot of really fun and intense moments, and you get over the fact of "ohh no my character died :(" pretty quick. Its a lot more like D&D in that regard where you get attached to characters, but know they could bite it at any point, then its time for someone else's story.
