at the start terribly, she lets so much happen but I think if she got a second chance like in a "the souls came back to life" situation she'd probably take it seriously enough. if nothing else I think she'd take the fact that he died on her watch pretty hard when it had time to sink in.

I'm trying to think of it as since he didn't have his soul, just determination he was able to focus on martlets voice, marltet who never missed a day the entire time until the barrier was broken to keep from falling apart, so when his soul returns to him instead of his emotions coming back leading to him being a broken person he was staying awake with a purpose. "I wont give up, she didn't give up and so I wont give up". with him not having his soul during that time maybe its feasible that with something to focus on he didn't suffer the agony of being locked in place. to him it was just moments when he could hear her voice and moments when he couldnt. and because of her he was strong enough. I think this ending is still happy, he'd probably still be distant at times but with his soul back after the barrier is broken martlet sees that warmness in him again even if theres some sadness on top.
