>In recent days, I received many messages suggesting that the consideration of 3I/ATLAS as a possible alien technology inspires the public. Science is supposed to appeal to the public because it is supported by taxes. Yet, when the discussion on 3I/ATLAS became viral, several of my colleagues chose to throw cold water at the public’s interest, arguing based on very preliminary data that 3I/ATLAS must be a comet. The truth is that science is work in progress, where multiple interpretations must be entertained in order to motivate data collection. Insisting that 3I/ATLAS must be a comet is unwise because it does not exhibit a cometary tail and its trajectory is fine-tuned to align with the orbital plane of the planets around the Sun. As of now, the glow of light ahead of 3I/ATLAS can be maintained for six months by the ablation of a millimeter-thick layer of dirt on the surface of a 20-kilometer object.
