I don't think Biwa looked ugly when looking her up, quite the opposite due the fluffyness of the horse. Maybe it's some sort of a inner circle thing similar to pet shows.

Later on you will be able to change costumes as long as you own the alternative version(s). I did not play JP version, but that is what I found out when reading about the alternative outfits and characters.
