My neighborhood had a lot of stray cats. Of all that the neighbors used to care for, only one was unwelcomed to all. It was an orange tabby with a single milk white eye, crusted over with a thick layer of pale green pus. Sometimes I wondered if it had someone's kitten before, surrounded by smiling faces and family it would never see again.

I remember one Winter night seeing a much cleaner female lying with it on my steps. Both were purring, and she groomed the pus from off its one functional eye before, over the course of the night, cleaning most of the mud from its pelt. I don't know why humans feel such visceral disgust for the ugly. Despite the fact that it was ugly, mutilated, diseased, nearly blind, and could offer her nothing in return, they spent many cold nights together; I have never heard of such a thing in human beings.

In March, while the flowers bloomed on the trees in the last snow of Spring, I saw him crushed on the side of the road, as alone and forgotten in death as he was in life. Yet one could only imagine, that if he could choose to be born and live his wretched life again, he would do it a thousand times over for her.
