Lukewarm take: The LGPA should play Sunday to Wednesday
Between the ~30 or whatever it is pro leagues in the world it is a travesty that outside of the rare "big" college or KF tournament, Mon to Wed on the golf channel is just endless reruns of the same 1 hour sportscenter-esque show and some old dude giving lessons. One channel away is tennis and they always seem to have shit going on
>>149127464Im surprised they haven't done this yet desu. Especially since sports betting has become so widespread, there's a significant demographic of degenerates (like myself) who would bet on and watch LPGA events every week if they were the only game in town monday-wednesday
>>149122844>It's gonna be a bloodbathGood. I'd much rather watch pros compete to break 80 than 60.

i still cant believe how bad the us open at lacc was and that drive on the final hole from wyndham
>>149129430fast greens and tall rough
landing spots on fairways are narrow and slope away from the middle, a perfect drive can land in the middle of the fairway and roll into the rough
>>149129597so basically lots of tall grass that you don't want to get in and when you're not in the bad spots the ball moves faster than you'd expect?
>>149129430Long rough(the tall grass outside the fairways), green speeds comparable to hardwood floors combined with extreme slopes, firm conditions that penalize anything less than perfect shot placement
Even the pros, the best players in the world, are going to struggle to shoot par on this course. I'd wager we will see multiple rounds in the high 80's and maybe even in the 90's Thursday and Friday
>>149129639interesting. has this course been used for a major before?
>>149129430in simple terms the usga always tries to make the us open course significantly harder than the typical tour stop. that means narrower fairways, thicker and taller rough than normal, fast and demonically sloping greens, etc.
>>149129660Yeah, this is the 10th time the US Open has been held there. First one since they did a major remodel, and it's set up much harder than previous times but even prior to that it was a tough course for them
>>149129667is there a reason for that? or just fuck it why not let's mix up the courses

>>149129722Majors are fun to watch, especially now that there's drama with the LIV guys who only get to play with PGA pros in majors
>>149129695because the usga realized its more entertaining to watch the best of the best struggle, and people love watching the rory mcilroy's of the world get rattled trying to hack it out of some absurd rough.
the official line is that its the "toughest test in golf" to see who the best really is
>>149129746i thought the LIV thing was being reconciled and they were gonna merge back, i guess that didnt happen yet? i thought i had read something like that a year or so ago
>>149129761fair enough, makes sense. all the amateur golfers out there seeing the pros struggle makes them think they can do it too yadda yadda
Worth noting that Russell Henley just beat a stacked field at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, and Bay Hill had some gnarly rough. Scottie finished 7 shots off the lead in that tournament. He's among the best on tour at hitting fairways and approach shots. Would be surprised if he doesn't contend this week.
PATRICK REED FROM THE TOP ROPE
>>149117327>dentistThey want tiger there but he can't, kek.
>>149129766I don't see any merger, it's obvious that LIV bit off more than they could chew.
Everyone thought they were competition for the PGAT but they're really competition for the Champions tour.
Watching the same "big name" players in no-name tournaments, that what the Champions tour is.
PGAT can wait LIV out, golfers are so streaky top performers change so fast that in another couple years there will be two dozen players better than Rahm and Co.
LIV had promise but they totally overlooked the broadcast part of the equation, they could have done something new in that sense and they've done fuck all.
I see everyone just walking away.
>>149133301idk LIV still has fuck you money right? I imagine the saudis will get a merge or something they want.
>>149133331I don't think that's gonna help them, Bryson's rise in popularity (which is all his doing) helped them tremendously.
Without Bryson LIV would be looked upon completely differently right now.
I watch European tour morning and afternoon and PGAT afternoon and evening and I've watched LIV and it just got boring very fast.
American networks love having a superstar, I don't really need that, and golf isn't really set up for that, they all have periods where they're in form and everyone in the field on Thursday has a chance and I'm happy watching Fox or Griffin or Straka as much as I am Bryson or Rahm.
Really don't care if I've never heard of a player before, I've heard of him now.
First group out, pretty entertaining thus far.
>>149133490I believe LIV lost the battle the moment Tiger snubbed them. If the ultimate icon of the sport tells you to fuck off, you're already 20 over par before you even start.

Question:
Would it be viable to keep one club in your bag with a sharpened leading edge for aid in getting out of 5+ inch rough like you see at Oakmont?
I'm talking about like a 54 or 56 degree wedge with a leading edge that's honed like a knife and could actually slice through the grass.
Obviously if you struck too high and bladed a shot, you would ruin the ball. But I believe the rules state you can replace a ball at any point that is damaged with a cut or crack.
Just curious if anyone has any input or knowledge of rules that might prevent this?

>>149158314I don't mean to get pedantic, but I'm trying to figure out if there's a specific rule that would prohibit it. Like grooves for example have a listed specification that they can't be sharpened beyond, measured in microns.
>>149158445I don't see how that rule would preclude it.
>>149158527It’s not “plain in shape” if you’re sharpening one edge to the point you can cut grass with it. The club would be considered non-conforming. If the sharpened bottom edge protruded past the face in any way, it would be non-confirming.
>>149158506completely legal
>>149158612retard, have you ever heard of different wedge grinds?

The club wouldn’t be confirming because the sharpened edge would be considered a gimmick feature
>>149158612Yeah I feel like there might be some subjective interpretation of a rule you would run into, and "plain in shape" is a possibility. But where would you draw the line? Plenty of players play with fairly sharp leading edges on wedges.
And I didn't say anything about the edge sticking out. It wouldn't have to. Just a regular edge, but sharper.
Another question would be if a rules official interprets a club you bring for a round as non-conforming, would you then be allowed to replace it with a different club mid-round?
>>149158629Easy killer. Wedge grind mostly has to do with the angle and shape of the sole, not the leading edge.
>>149158723Cite the rule against "gimmick features"
